Sunday Morning: Reflection (continued).

The DMZ Operation

Major General Jarvis Lynch, USMC (Retired)

Major Jarvis Lynch was the operations officer for BLT 2/26, call sign John Brown 3.

He knew that a month-long search-and-destroy operation in Vietnam's DMZ in 1968 would be no picnic.

Then, just before the operation was to begin, the senior enlisted Marine in the battalion, World War II and Korea veteran Sergeant Major John Whirley, warned him that he had a bad feeling about this one.

The sergeant major was right. Over six weeks, the reinforced battalion fought its way out of three helicopter landing zones, with trouble waiting at each one.

The first one was named LZ Margo...
